This weekend was very busy with different activities and events that we are involved with. One of the events was a 25th Wedding Anniversary for Veronica’s sister and her husband. What a joyous event. As we viewed the photo presentation – of the years past to the present – my mind raced through the many happy memories we’ve shared with the young couple. “Young” because they are younger than we – but have been together since middle school. They started out young and in love – and I can honestly say, they are still just as in love and young at heart. Some say ‘the exception to the rule’. I say NOT God’s rule. Although married young, they place Christ in the center of their home – regardless of the examples all around them. They have fought to keep their marriage strong through adversity and victories.

Many couples celebrate wedding anniversaries; 20, 25 & even 50 – but slowly drift to their “own” corners of the house. Their lives filled with more things that, instead of bringing them closer, moves them away from each other. You’ve heard “we just grew apart”…excusing themselves from the responsibility to carry out their vows.

Most couples recite some version of: “Will you love him/her, comfort, honor and keep him/her, in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sadness and in joy, to cherish and continually bestow upon him/her your heart’s deepest devotion, forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto him/her as long as you both shall live?” the response a resounding “I DO”.

But I wonder if they could see the future pain, sarcasm, in-sensitivities times of poverty, the frequent “worse” times that would come, would they be so quick to reply. Commitment – is a contract that has been so easily dismissed, filled with ‘loop-poles’ where we can escape from our promises to each other.

I can truly appreciate the Rivera’s love and commitment for each other. They never seem to be apart! Every part of their lives are inter-twined. Some may see it as a ‘handicap’, but I choose to see it as fulfilling their commitment to each other.

Happy Anniversary – my friends, brother & sister in Christ, and exceptional example of God’s Love for His church.
